Thousands of tourists have flocked to Bac Ha district in the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai for the 17th annual horse race, a much-anticipated cultural event. The race, featuring amateur riders mainly consisting of farmers, marks the opening of the Bac Ha White Plateau Festival.

The People's Committee of Bac Ha district reported that 86 riders from various districts in Lao Cai and nearby Tuyen Quang province participated. The event began with a ritual ceremony and street parade, reflecting the deep connection between horses and the local ethnic communities. The horses then raced in a 1,900-metre qualifying round, with the top 32 horses advancing to the final on June 8.

The festival, which started on June 1, expects over 65,000 visitors. Recognized as national intangible cultural heritage since 2021, the horse race is the festival's highlight. Other attractions include folk performances, viewing sunsets and sunrises over Mount Ngai Thau, and visiting ancient tea trees and scenic spots.

Bac Ha district, known for its fresh, cool climate and beautiful landscapes, is home to 14 ethnic minority groups, each with unique customs and traditions. The district has developed diverse tourism products, focusing on community-based initiatives that highlight local culture. Bui Van Vinh, head of the Culture and Information Department, noted that the festival has become a distinctive tourism product of Lao Cai, attracting both domestic and international visitors.
