Ca Mau Province in the Mekong Delta is nearing completion of a large freshwater lake, aimed at providing essential water supply to over 11,000 families. Beginning in early 2021, the project has progressed steadily, with the lake currently at 82% completion.

Funded by the World Bank as part of the Mekong Delta Integrated Climate Resilience and Sustainable Livelihoods Project, the lake comes at an estimated cost of 248 billion Vietnamese Dong (or 9.91 million US dollars). Originally set for completion by the end of 2022, delays ensued due to challenges with the soil foundations.

Once operational, the lake will alleviate groundwater depletion, mitigate erosion, and bolster firefighting efforts during dry seasons. Drawing water from the Hau River, a Mekong tributary, it will serve areas like Tran Van Thoi and Thoi Binh districts, along with the Khanh An industrial complex, addressing critical water shortages experienced this dry season.

The project represents a crucial step towards securing water resources and enhancing resilience in the region, offering hope for improved livelihoods and demonstrating Vietnam's comittment to sustainable development.
