A quiet revolution is taking place across Vietnam’s remote and mountainous regions, where community-based tourism is reshaping local economies and helping preserve the rich cultural traditions of ethnic groups. These communities, once isolated, are now attracting foreign travelers eager for authentic cultural experiences, offering a glimpse into the daily lives and customs of Vietnam’s diverse ethnic groups.

The tourism boom is providing more than just financial benefits; it is becoming a crucial means of safeguarding cultural heritage. Communities are offering immersive experiences such as learning to make traditional Cham cakes, participating in folk music exchanges, and watching performances of ancient musical instruments. Nguyen Anh Tuan, Director of the Institute for Tourism Development Research, explains that these tourism experiences help sustain local economies while preserving cultural identities.

In Soc Trang province, the Dai Tam commune in My Xuyen district is a prime example of how community-based tourism can thrive. By blending the heritage of the Kinh, Khmer, and Hoa ethnic groups, the commune attracts over 200,000 visitors annually. Tourists visit the Chen Kieu Pagoda, enjoy traditional Khmer music, purchase handicrafts, and engage with local ceremonies. Similarly, in Tay Ninh province, the Bau Tuc pottery village offers visitors the chance to explore the unique pottery-making tradition of the Cham people. These projects not only provide economic opportunities but also contribute to preserving the traditional crafts of each region.
