While experts argue that the likelihood of similar incidents happening in Vietnam is low, they also acknowledge that certain risks still exist.

Vietnam's alcohol culture differs significantly from that in countries with higher rates of alcohol consumption. Bars and hostels catering to backpackers in Vietnam are typically operated by foreigners, who tend to source alcohol from large, reputable suppliers, making the use of fake alcohol less likely. Additionally, Vietnam’s strict laws ensure that bar owners face severe consequences for selling dangerous products, further minimizing the risk of methanol poisoning.

However, while the fake alcohol market in Vietnam is small, the real danger lies in homemade alcohol, commonly purchased from street markets or informal suppliers. These products can contain dangerously high alcohol concentrations, leading to alcohol poisoning. Tourists are advised to be cautious when buying alcohol from unregulated sources and to only consume sealed, bottled, or canned beverages purchased from reputable vendors.
