Extreme Heat Wave in HCM City: Elderly and Children Suffer, Prone to Heat-Related Illnesses

In HCM City, extreme heat is leading to an increase in health issues, particularly among the elderly and young children.
The southern region is experiencing its hottest heat wave this year, with temperatures reaching up to 38.5 degrees Celsius.

This hot weather puts everyone at risk of heat-related illnesses, including sunstroke, heat stroke, dyspnea, and stroke.

Symptoms can range from mild, such as fatigue and dizziness, to severe, such as confusion, difficulty breathing, and coma.

The risk is heightened due to prolonged exposure to hot conditions, lack of rest and hydration, and sudden temperature changes.

The text discusses the increased vulnerability of seniors, children, women, and people with chronic diseases to health issues during hot weather.

Thong Nhat Hospital in HCM City has seen an increase of 20% in elderly patients, mainly with pneumonia, bronchitis, and respiratory diseases.

Children's Hospital 2 has also reported an increase in patients due to temperature changes making them susceptible to respiratory, skin, and gastrointestinal diseases.

Other groups at risk include workers, farmers, and athletes who spend long periods outdoors.

During hot weather, Children's Hospital 2 doctor Nguyen Thanh Hai advises parents to ensure their children stay hydrated and eat well to boost their resistance.

To prevent heatstroke, people should drink plenty of water, wear light-colored, loose clothing, and limit outdoor work between 11am and 2pm.

When outside, use protective gear such as wide-brimmed hats, face masks, glasses, and work hats.

Avoid prolonged sun exposure or hot environments and take regular breaks in cool areas.
