Intensive snare removal efforts have led to a nearly 40 percent decrease in snaring incidents in the Thừa Thiên Huế and Quảng Nam Saola Nature Reserves, according to recent data. For the past eleven years, ranger patrols have actively removed close to 120,000 snares and traps, safeguarding several threatened species, including the large-antlered muntjac and the Annamite Striped Rabbit.

Despite the high costs and labor-intensive nature of snare removal, it remains the most effective method due to the challenging terrain. However, the impact of snare removal alone is limited. Scientists from WWF-Vietnam, the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research, and other partners concluded that while snare removal significantly reduces the threat, it must be part of a broader conservation strategy.

Efforts are now focusing on additional measures, such as cross-border cooperation to tackle illegal wildlife trade, livelihood improvements, and behavior change programs. These initiatives aim to address the root causes of snaring and enhance wildlife protection in the Central Annamite Mountains. The Bạch Mã National Park in Thừa Thiên Huế Province has been selected as the site for the world's only breeding center for the critically endangered saola.
