EU Boosts Aid to Typhoon Yagi Victims in Northern Vietnam
Additional €150,000 aims to support 130,000 people in hardest-hit regions
The European Union has released an additional €150,000 (US$200,700) in humanitarian aid to assist victims of Typhoon Yagi in northern Vietnam. This funding will provide food, household items, and cash grants to approximately 130,000 people across seven provinces, including Lao Cai, Yen Bai, and Lang Son. The support also includes emergency health services and measures to prevent waterborne diseases.
This new relief follows €650,000 (US$869,600) in aid provided earlier and is part of the EU’s overall contribution to the Disaster Response Emergency Fund. Typhoon Yagi caused over VND81 trillion (US$3.29 billion) in damage, with international organizations pledging over US$22 million to help Vietnam recover.
In addition to cash assistance, over 220 tonnes of relief goods, including essential supplies, have been delivered to the hardest-hit provinces from countries like Australia, India, and Russia. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development warns that the storm may affect Vietnam’s GDP growth for 2024.
