HCM City Launches Green University Project to Tackle Plastic Waste and Promote Sustainability
Văn Lang University joins forces with PepsiCo and GRAC to combat plastic waste through waste sorting and recycling initiatives.
HCM City is intensifying efforts to combat plastic waste and accelerate waste sorting, with the launch of the “Green University” project at Văn Lang University. The initiative, co-organized by PepsiCo Foods Vietnam, GRAC, and the university, aims to raise awareness about the environmental impact of plastic waste and encourage sustainable practices among students and staff.
The project encourages waste sorting at the source and promotes a circular economy through technology, focusing on digital solutions such as the GRAC app, which helps users manage waste and participate in recycling programs. The project also includes activities like workshops, competitions, and the "waste-for-gifts" program to engage students in environmental efforts. The initiative will be piloted at Văn Lang University and the HCM City University of Technology, with plans for expansion across the city.
HCM City’s ongoing efforts to reduce plastic waste are aligned with the 2022 Vietnam Law on Environmental Protection, which mandates waste separation at the source by December 31, 2024. As part of this, the city is also piloting waste segregation into three categories in specific high-waste areas, such as markets and dining venues, while assessing the effectiveness of these measures.
