Ho Chi Minh City Plans to Develop 42 Parks Along Saigon River

Initiative aims to enhance green spaces, drive economic growth, and improve residents' quality of life by 2045
Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) has announced plans to develop 42 new parks along the Saigon River as part of its broader project to enhance the riverside service economy by 2045. This ambitious initiative targets the Saigon River corridor, which runs through Thu Duc City, Districts 1, 4, 7, 12, Binh Thanh, and the suburban districts of Cu Chi and Hoc Mon. The development strategy emphasizes the integration of multi-functional green infrastructure to improve connectivity and align with HCMC's overall master plan adjustments, aiming to transform the riverfront into vibrant, accessible green spaces that cater to both residents and tourists.

The Saigon River, stretching 256 kilometers from Binh Phuoc Province through Tay Ninh, Binh Duong, and HCMC, currently hosts only a few parks within the city, including Bach Dang Park in Thu Thiem and the privately-owned park within Vinhomes Central Park. With HCMC boasting around 400 parks and over 235,000 trees, the existing green spaces offer an average of 0.55 square meters per person for its population of over ten million. The planned expansion will increase the green park area to over 11,400 hectares, providing seven square meters per person and significantly enhancing the city's landscape and livability.

The phased implementation of the park development will be coordinated with existing riverside infrastructure across various regions, based on expert consultations and research. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Mr. Maris Sangiampongsa, emphasized that the new parks are designed to capitalize on the Saigon River's potential, fostering a thriving service economy while preserving and enhancing the natural beauty of HCMC. This project not only aims to create more recreational spaces for residents but also seeks to attract international tourists, thereby boosting local businesses and contributing to the city's sustainable urban development.
