Luxembourg Pledges €600,000 for Vietnam and Laos Typhoon Relief Efforts

Funds will aid recovery from the devastation caused by Typhoon Yagi in Southeast Asia
Luxembourg has committed €600,000 in relief aid to support recovery efforts in Vietnam and Laos following the destruction caused by Typhoon Yagi. The storm, one of the most intense typhoons ever to hit northern Vietnam, resulted in an estimated 750 deaths across Southeast Asia, with Vietnam recording 303 fatalities and Laos four. The donation will be split between the World Food Programme and the Red Cross, with €450,000 directed to Vietnam and €150,000 for Laos, where 32,000 people are affected by the ongoing crisis in Luang Namtha.

In Vietnam, more than 188,000 homes have been destroyed, and over 725,000 people displaced as communities struggle for basic supplies. The typhoon has caused an estimated $15 billion in damages across the region. Reconstruction efforts are slowly beginning in both countries, but the need for humanitarian aid remains urgent.

Luxembourg’s contribution comes as part of its ongoing partnership with Vietnam and Laos in Southeast Asia. Meanwhile, Caritas Luxembourg's Laos operation will close following an embezzlement scandal, adding further strain to relief efforts in the region.
