12th ASEAN-U.S. Summit Held in Vientiane to Strengthen Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

Focus on trade, public health, and emerging technologies
On October 11, 2024, Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone presided over the 12th ASEAN-U.S. Summit in Vientiane, with leaders from ASEAN, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and the Prime Minister of Timor-Leste attending as an observer. The summit focused on advancing the ASEAN-U.S. Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, emphasizing joint projects that benefit the people of both regions.

The discussions highlighted 47 years of successful cooperation across political-security, economic, and socio-cultural sectors. Moving forward, Laos encouraged U.S. support in key areas such as trade, clean energy, public health, and education. The summit concluded with the adoption of the ASEAN-U.S. Leaders’ Statement on Promoting Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence.
