"Story of Hang Streets" Tour Brings 1940s-50s Hanoi to Life

Immersive live performances at Ma May Ancient House celebrate Hanoi’s rich heritage
The "Story of Hang Streets" realistic scene tour program delves into the elegant lifestyle and well-mannered conduct of Hanoi residents in the 1940s and 1950s. Held at the Ma May Ancient House in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, this 30-minute live performance offers visitors an immersive cultural experience with two shows every Saturday and Sunday evening. Directed by Meritorious Artist Le Anh Tuyet, the tour vividly portrays the daily lives of a four-generation herbalist family, highlighting traditional medicine practices and strong community bonds within the serene, historic setting of 87 Ma May Street.

Set against the backdrop of the 70th anniversary of Hanoi’s liberation, the "Story of Hang Streets" tour is part of a series of cultural events organized by the Hoan Kiem Lake and Hanoi Old Quarter Management Board in collaboration with artists from the Youth Theater of Vietnam. The performances capture the essence of old Hanoi, from the quiet ambiance of a herbal medicine store to the harmonious interactions of family members and the community. Visitors are transported back in time, witnessing the routines and relationships that defined Hanoi’s cultural landscape during that era.

The tour has attracted both local and foreign tourists eager to experience authentic Vietnamese culture. Cao Quoc Trung, Branch Manager of Vidotour Indochina Travel, noted the high interest from international visitors who cherish cultural forms such as realistic-scene shows and traditional music. Meritorious Artist Le Anh Tuyet emphasized the tour’s role in promoting Hanoi’s cultural heritage and expressed hope that charging foreign guests in the future will enhance the show’s sustainability and value. "Story of Hang Streets" not only preserves the rich traditions of Hanoi but also fosters a deeper appreciation for the city’s vibrant history among its audiences.
