Sweden Shares Expertise to Help Vietnam Achieve Net-Zero Emissions by 2050

Ambassador Johan Ndisi highlights Sweden's success in decarbonizing its economy
Swedish Ambassador to Vietnam Johan Ndisi has emphasized how Sweden's economic growth continues alongside reduced electricity consumption, hoping this expertise can assist Vietnam in reaching its net-zero emissions target by 2050. Speaking to _Tuoi Tre_ newspaper, Ambassador Ndisi recounted Sweden's journey from heavy oil dependence during the 1970s global oil crisis to becoming a leader in renewable energy and sustainability.

He highlighted that Sweden's government shifted to nuclear power and invested in central heating systems to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. As a result, from 1995 to 2019, Sweden's GDP per capita increased by nearly 50 percent while electricity consumption per capita decreased. Ambassador Ndisi noted that Sweden's success demonstrates that an industrialized nation can reduce emissions and electricity use while boosting economic growth.

Expressing readiness to share Sweden's experience with Vietnam, Ambassador Ndisi supported initiatives like the Green Economy Forum & Exhibition 2024 in Ho Chi Minh City. He emphasized the importance of government policies promoting renewable energy investment, waste management, and public engagement in sustainability efforts. "By sharing our experience and technology, we can support Vietnam in creating sustainable systems that not only benefit the environment but also drive economic growth," he stated.
