Military forces enhance cooperation during the Second Vietnam-Laos Border Defense Friendship Exchange
Vietnam and Laos conducted a joint exercise on combating cross-border drug crimes on Tuesday in Son La Province, northwestern Vietnam. The event was part of the Second Vietnam-Laos Border Defense Friendship Exchange, aiming to strengthen cooperation between the two countries' military forces. Organized by the Border Guard Command of Son La Province and the Military Command of Laos’ Houaphanh Province, the exercise focused on enhancing joint operational capabilities.
Co-directed by Vietnamese Minister of National Defense General Phan Van Giang and Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Chansamone Chanyalath, the training involved coordinated operations to apprehend drug traffickers. The exercise included establishing joint command posts, deploying ambush formations, and conducting cross-border pursuits to capture suspects and rescue hostages. These activities are crucial as the Vietnam-Laos border is a significant transit route for drug trafficking.
Since 2020, authorities from both countries have collaborated to dismantle nearly 30 major drug cases, seizing several tons of narcotics. The joint exercise highlights the commitment of Vietnam and Laos to strengthen their cooperation in border management, protection, and crime prevention. Officials from both sides expressed that the collaboration enhances mutual understanding and effectiveness in combating drug-related crimes, reinforcing the solidarity between their military forces.
