On March 13, 2025, the provinces of Kon Tum in Vietnam and Attapeu in Laos entered into a memorandum of understanding to upgrade the Dak Long-Vang Tat auxiliary border gates to main status. The agreement, signed by Y Ngoc, Vice Chairwoman of Kon Tum, and Thanuvong Bansalit, Deputy Governor of Attapeu, is designed to facilitate the movement of people, goods, and vehicles between the two provinces. By enhancing the border gate, the provinces expect to promote greater trade, infrastructure development, and expanded investment opportunities.

This initiative is part of ongoing endeavors to bolster cooperation between Kon Tum and Attapeu, who already share a history of collaboration on border security and boundary marker management. The new designation is anticipated to encourage tourism and trade while generating job opportunities for local residents.

Presently, Kon Tum province shares its border with Laos through three gates: Bo Y-Phu Cua, Dak Long-Vang Tat, and Dak Blo-Dak Bar. With the elevation of Dak Long-Vang Tat, the border region is poised to see improved economic connections, benefiting both Vietnam's Central Highlands and Laos' southern territories.
