Vietnam Launches Urgent Plan to Save Wild Elephants as Population Drops Below 200

Conservation efforts focus on habitat restoration, anti-poaching measures, and human-elephant coexistence
Vietnam is stepping up its efforts to protect its rapidly declining elephant population, which has fallen to fewer than 200 in the wild. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development unveiled a comprehensive conservation plan on Wednesday, aimed at addressing the threats facing wild and captive elephants. The plan includes 33 measures for wild elephants and 21 for those in captivity, focusing on long-term goals such as expanding protected areas, strengthening anti-poaching efforts, and developing eco-tourism initiatives to support conservation while boosting local economies.

Vietnam’s wild elephant population has drastically decreased from 2,000 in the 1980s due to habitat loss, poaching, and human-elephant conflicts. Deputy Minister of Agriculture Nguyen Quoc Tri emphasized that elephant conservation is vital not only for the species itself but also for maintaining biodiversity and ensuring a harmonious relationship between humans and nature. The plan outlines key objectives including the protection and restoration of populations, better legal frameworks, and strategies to reduce human-elephant conflict.

The new conservation plan builds on previous initiatives, with the goal of reversing the population decline and addressing growing challenges. With the government’s renewed commitment to elephant conservation, officials hope these efforts will ensure a sustainable future for the species and help restore balance in Vietnam’s ecosystems.
