Following the much-anticipated commercial rollout of 5G services in Vietnam on Tuesday, many smartphone users were eager to experience lightning-fast internet speeds. While some have enjoyed impressive performance boosts, others are finding that 5G in certain areas is no faster than, or even slower than, their existing 4G connections.

Recent tests conducted in Ho Chi Minh City revealed significant fluctuations in 5G speeds depending on location and time. In some spots, such as Viettel's 5G experience center in District 10, download speeds reached up to 779 megabits per second (Mbps). However, in other areas like Phan Xich Long Street in Phu Nhuan District, speeds hovered around 52 Mbps, comparable to average 4G performance. The lowest recorded speed was approximately 36 Mbps at a busy intersection in District 1.

Telecommunications experts attribute these inconsistencies to factors like limited signal coverage, network congestion during peak hours, and the infancy of the 5G infrastructure. They note that such variations are common during the early stages of a new network rollout. Mobile operators are expected to continue expanding and optimizing their networks to provide more consistent and widespread 5G coverage in the coming months.
