Innovative Policies and Infrastructure Drive Economic Growth in Long An Province
Đồng Tháp Mười, a vast wetland in the Mekong Delta, has undergone a remarkable transformation from a swampy, deserted land to a thriving agricultural region. Spanning about 690,000 hectares, the area has seen significant development thanks to central and local government policies over the past 50 years.
During the resistance war, Đồng Tháp Mười was challenging to cultivate due to alum soil and annual flooding. However, the construction of canals, including the crucial Măng Đa-Cái Môn Canal, has dramatically improved the land. These canals help wash alum from the soil, making it fertile for agriculture.
Long An Province, which occupies more than half of Đồng Tháp Mười, now boasts high rice productivity, increasing from five to 14 tonnes per hectare annually. Modern technology and mechanization have been widely adopted, boosting efficiency and reducing costs. The region aims to cultivate 60,000 hectares of rice using high-tech methods by 2025, with 56,000 hectares already achieved.
Local cooperatives, like the Gò Gòn Cooperative, play a vital role in connecting farmers with businesses and promoting organic rice production. Infrastructure improvements, such as the construction of National Highway 62, further support economic growth.
Education and healthcare are also prioritized. The Thiên Hộ Dương High School has achieved a 100 percent graduation rate, and the new Đồng Tháp Mười Regional General Hospital provides advanced medical services to the community.
