Vietnam Proclaims National Mourning for Former President of Laos

April 4–5 Celebrates Khamtay Siphandone's Legacy and Connections with Vietnam
Vietnam has designated April 4 and 5 as national days of mourning for Khamtay Siphandone, the former President of Laos and a revolutionary figure, to honor his lifelong dedication to Laos and his efforts in enhancing the Laos-Vietnam relationship. This announcement was made jointly by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the National Assembly, the Government, the President’s Office, and the Vietnam Fatherland Front.

Throughout the two-day mourning period, government offices, public institutions, and diplomatic missions abroad will display the national flag at half-mast and refrain from all entertainment and celebratory events. This act highlights the strong ties between the two countries and their common revolutionary legacy.

Khamtay Siphandone passed away on April 2 at the age of 100. A pivotal figure in Laos' revolutionary narrative, he held positions as the State President, Prime Minister, and Minister of National Defense. Vietnamese leaders recognized him as a trusted ally and a significant contributor to the lasting friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and Laos.
