Vietnam Proposes $67.34 Billion for North-South High-Speed Rail

Project set to begin construction in 2027, boosting regional connectivity and sustainable transport.
The Ministry of Transport has proposed a budget of $67.34 billion for Vietnam’s North-South high-speed rail line, according to the Vietnam News Agency. The ambitious 1,541-kilometer rail project is designed to transform the country's transportation infrastructure, with trains running at a top speed of 350 kilometers per hour.

The high-speed rail will adopt open-track technology, allowing for various types of trains, which will help encourage competition and prevent service monopolies. The investment plan is expected to be submitted to the National Assembly for approval in October, with the first construction phase beginning in late 2027 on the Hanoi–Vinh and Nha Trang–HCMC sections. The Vinh–Nha Trang section is scheduled to follow in 2028-2029, and the entire rail line is slated for completion by 2035.

This project is expected to significantly enhance regional connectivity, support urban development, and promote sustainable transportation. It will help reduce logistics costs, minimize environmental impacts, and contribute to Vietnam’s long-term socio-economic growth.
