Jimmy Carter, Former U.S. President and Humanitarian Icon, Dies at 100

The 39th President Leaves Behind a Legacy of Peace, Human Rights, and Humanitarian Service
Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States and a global symbol of humanitarianism, has passed away at the age of 100. The Carter Center announced that Carter died peacefully at his home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by his family, more than a year after entering hospice care.

Serving as president from 1977 to 1981, Carter was known for his dedication to peace and diplomacy, notably brokering the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel. However, his presidency faced challenges, including economic struggles and the Iran hostage crisis, leading to his 1980 defeat by Ronald Reagan.

After leaving office, Carter transformed the role of former presidents through tireless humanitarian work. In 1982, he founded The Carter Center, an organization committed to human rights, conflict resolution, and disease eradication. Carter also contributed extensively to Habitat for Humanity, building homes for families in need. In 2002, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in advancing peace and human rights globally.

Tributes poured in from leaders worldwide. President Joe Biden called him an "extraordinary leader and statesman," while former President Barack Obama highlighted his lifelong commitment to justice. Carter’s son, Chip Carter, described him as a hero who brought people together through love and compassion.

Carter’s wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter, passed away in November 2023. He is survived by his four children, 11 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.

A state funeral will be held in Atlanta and Washington, D.C., before Carter is laid to rest in his beloved hometown of Plains, Georgia.

Carter’s legacy as a champion of peace, human rights, and humanitarian work will continue to inspire future generations worldwide.
