Japan Ready to Collaborate with Vietnam on Nuclear Power and Infrastructure Projects

Japan expresses readiness to support Vietnam’s nuclear power plans and infrastructure development, including high-speed rail and human resources training.
Japan is prepared to collaborate with Vietnam on the feasibility studies and deployment of nuclear reactors, as well as contribute to other infrastructure projects, according to Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam, Ito Naoki.

In an exclusive interview with the Vietnam News Agency at the start of 2025, Ito shared Japan's intention to provide technical expertise in the field of nuclear energy, leveraging its 60 years of experience in nuclear power development.

Japan has operated around 60 nuclear plants, and is eager to assist Vietnam in restarting its nuclear power project in Ninh Thuan Province.

In addition to nuclear energy, Japan aims to continue its support in sectors such as high-speed rail, following the successful operation of the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railways No.1, a symbol of Japan-Vietnam cooperation.

Ito highlighted the potential for Japan to share its experience with Vietnam as the country moves forward with its North-South high-speed rail project, referencing the success of Japan’s Shinkansen system.

The Shinkansen's technology has significantly contributed to Japan's economic growth, and Vietnam is looking to replicate its success in regional development.

Japan also seeks to strengthen its economic partnership with Vietnam, noting that the latter is considered one of the most desirable countries for Japanese businesses to expand within ASEAN.

Japan will continue supporting Vietnam's goals in the green transition, digital transformation, and human resource development.

Ito emphasized Japan’s readiness to assist Vietnam through joint research initiatives and workforce training in the nuclear sector, with key contributions from Japan's Atomic Energy Agency and other specialized organizations.

As Vietnam aims to become a developed country by 2045, Japan’s expertise in nuclear energy and infrastructure development is poised to play a vital role in the country’s future growth.
