Wild Bird Sanctuary Thrives Along Busy Highway in An Giang

Thousands of storks and herons create a stunning spectacle during Tet holiday
A roadside garden in Chau Thanh District, An Giang Province, has become an unexpected sanctuary for thousands of wild birds, mainly storks and herons. Located along the bustling National Highway 91, the two-hectare garden has amazed passers-by, especially during the Lunar New Year holiday, with flocks of white birds soaring above and nesting on tall trees.

According to Huynh Van Nhut, the 75-year-old caretaker, the area was devoid of birds when he first moved there 28 years ago. However, around three years later, storks began arriving, and their numbers have steadily grown ever since. Each morning, the birds fly out in search of food, returning in the evening, creating a captivating daily routine.

Nguyen Ky Phat, 63, who has helped protect the birds for over a decade, believes the garden’s peaceful environment and suitable trees have made it an ideal nesting ground. Despite being close to a busy highway, the birds seem undisturbed by human activity, with their population continuing to flourish.
