Vietnam ranks 63rd globally, slipping five places in English proficiency
Vietnam has dropped five spots in the 2024 English Proficiency Index, now ranking 63rd out of 116 countries, placing it in the "low proficiency" category. Released by EF Education First, the report reveals a score of 498 out of 800 for Vietnam, marking a decline from its 58th position in 2023. The highest English skills within Vietnam are found in the Red River Delta, led by Hanoi, with a score of 524, closely followed by Ho Chi Minh City and Hai Phong at 523.
In the Asian region, Vietnam ranks 8th among 23 nations and territories, down by one position from the previous year. Singapore remains Asia’s top English-speaking nation, achieving "very high proficiency" and placing 3rd globally. The report also indicates that individuals aged 26-30 exhibit the strongest English skills, with men generally outperforming women.
According to the report's author, Kate Bell, global English proficiency has declined for the fourth consecutive year, with significant drops noted in Asia, particularly in India and China. EF Education First, a global academic institution, has released this annual ranking since 2011.
