Vietnam Telecoms Industry Balances Investments in 4G and 5G Technologies

4G remains dominant as providers expand connectivity
Vietnam's telecom providers are intensifying investments in 4G and 5G infrastructure, with 4G set to remain the leading technology until at least 2030. Despite nationwide efforts to commercialise 5G in 2024, operators are bolstering 4G networks to support connectivity for the majority of subscribers.

Viettel, VNPT, and MobiFone are rapidly expanding 4G coverage while preparing for 5G. Viettel alone plans to add 7,000 new 4G base stations by 2025, targeting coverage for 98% of the population. VNPT is also extending its 4G reach while advancing 5G capabilities, aiming for download speeds of 40Mb/s for 4G and 100Mb/s for 5G.

Telecom providers highlight the ongoing importance of 4G, particularly as 2G services are discontinued, ensuring a seamless transition and high-quality service for consumers across urban and rural areas.
