Hanoi Grapples with Cleanup Efforts One Week After Typhoon Yagi

Nearly 40,000 Uprooted Trees Continue to Disrupt Daily Life in the Capital
A week after Typhoon Yagi swept through Hanoi, the city is still struggling with the aftermath, as nearly 40,000 uprooted trees remain blocking streets and disrupting daily life. The typhoon, which hit on September 7 with winds of up to 102 kilometers per hour, caused widespread destruction, particularly in central areas and historic spots like Hoan Kiem Lake.

Despite mobilizing all available workforce and equipment, including support from armed forces and neighboring provinces, Hanoi's Department of Construction reports that the sheer number of damaged trees has overwhelmed removal efforts. The cleanup, focusing on central districts and major roads, is expected to continue until September 20, with 3,000 trees classified for replanting and over 250 already re-erected.

Deputy Chairman Duong Duc Tuan has called for standardized data on tree damage and the rescue of ancient and valuable trees, emphasizing the city's commitment to restoring its greenery. Meanwhile, VnExpress has launched the "To Weather the Storm" campaign to help communities recover from the typhoon.
