Typhoon Yagi Causes Severe Flooding in Northern Vietnam, Claims Over 330 Lives

Devastating floods and landslides leave communities in Lào Cai isolated as authorities work to restore safety and reopen key transport routes.
Typhoon Yagi has wreaked havoc in Vietnam, resulting in 336 people dead or missing, according to the Vietnam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority. The hardest-hit area is Lào Cai Province, where 98 people have died, and 81 remain missing. The devastating flash floods and landslides in Làng Nủ hamlet alone have left 110 people dead or missing. More than 9,000 homes across the province have been submerged, eroded, or washed away by floods. Local authorities are actively mobilizing search and rescue operations, involving 650 personnel in Nủ Village. Despite ongoing efforts, many villages are still isolated due to blocked roads.

Railway operations across Hanoi's Long Biên and Đuống bridges are set to resume as water levels in the Red and Đuống Rivers recede. Hanoi's Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue Command issued an order to lower the flood alert level, marking a positive step towards restoring normalcy in the city. However, the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting warns of continued flood risks in the Red River system. Floodwaters remain high, posing serious risks to vulnerable areas across several provinces, including Hà Nội, Bắc Giang, and Thái Nguyên.

Residents in these areas are advised to stay vigilant as flood levels are expected to remain above warning levels in the coming days. Prolonged high floodwaters could lead to breaches or overflow of riverbanks, putting more communities at risk. The disaster risk warning level remains at level 3.
