Vietnam sees drop in car imports in August

Thailand remains the top car exporter to Vietnam despite overall import decrease
Vietnam imported 15,061 complete built-up (CBU) cars in August, marking a 12.6 percent drop compared to the previous month, according to the General Department of Vietnam Customs. Despite the decline, the overall number of car imports in the first eight months of 2024 increased by 22.9 percent year-on-year, totaling 106,627 units. Of these, cars with nine seats or fewer made up 87,352 units, representing a 25.4 percent increase, while truck imports saw a significant drop of 21.7 percent during the same period.

Thailand emerged as the largest car exporter to Vietnam, contributing 6,384 units, followed by Indonesia and China, which exported 5,770 and 2,443 units, respectively. These three countries together accounted for 97 percent of the total car import volume, solidifying their dominance in the Vietnamese market. Cars with nine seats or fewer made up the bulk of the imports, with 12,776 units accounting for 84.8 percent of the total import volume in August alone.

The import of trucks, however, experienced a sharp decline. Only 1,351 trucks were imported in August, down by 40 percent compared to the previous month. The total value of these trucks amounted to US$36.7 million. Meanwhile, cars with more than nine seats saw minimal sales, with only 18 units sold nationwide.
